 | This Hartwick Classic Film Leadership Case® is based on the film The Contender, which follows in the tradition of many great political films, highlighting issues of morality and ethics and public versus private life. However, it is unique in its focus on a female vice presidential candidate and fierce in its exposure of gender biases, sexual stereotypes and discriminations that confront female leaders seeking executive roles. Laine Hanson’s unyielding principles in the face of political pressures, from both her detractors and her supporters as she fights sexual allegations made against her, are a lesson in moral courage. Her ability to navigate a male-dominated power landscape, her tactics in handling savage assaults on her integrity, and her composure under a variety of leadership challenges, make her a model female leader. The film is, of course, an entertaining introduction as well to political history that will invite students to review some leadership circumstances of the past, including those of the McCarthy era, and of the Clinton administration. But most importantly, The Contender is timely, as more and more women take office in the government and we head closer to the reality of a woman being voted into office as Commander in Chief.
